Meditation for Actors Training, Melbourne, July 31, 10am-6pm.
This workshop will teach the basic practice of Heart Rhythm Meditation and its applications to: -shaping action and text too for greater impact -creating magnetic presence -expanded emotional communication -impulse and intuition -contact with partners and audience, and -creation of character.
Some background: Meditation played a crucial role in the birth of modern acting. Stanislavsky, Michael Chekhov and the actors of the First Studio practiced a particular practical, embodied form of meditation, based on breathing in rhythm with the heartbeat. Stanislavsky called this practice ‘rhythmic breathing’ and placed enormous importance on it. ‘Unless you do this practice,’ he told his students, ‘you will never become good actors!’ This important fact was lost, mostly due to Soviet censorship. This form of meditation is the source of so much of Stanislavsky's and Michael Chekhov's techniques. Practicing it reveals them in a new light; they come alive and make more immediate, practical sense. Heart Rhythm Meditation is an advanced and expanded version of Stanislavski’s basic practice, formulated by American meditation teachers and Sufi masters Puran and Susanna Bair of the Institute of Applied Meditation in Tuscon, Arizona. Ash has studied extensively with the Bairs, beginning in 2004.
